Synopsis:

Frederick Wiseman’s 42nd documentary brings his incisive vision to one of the world’s greatest institutions of learning, capturing the vast cultural scope of New York City’s library system. The NYPL is blessed with rich collections, passionate staff, and deeply devoted, appreciative bibliophiles and beneficiaries across its 92 branches. Wiseman reveals a venerable place of welcome, cultural exchange, and intellectual creativity, and films NYPL guest speakers including Richard Dawkins, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. An epic and inspiring film about the idea of libraries not as 'storage space for books' but as 'pillars of democracy' and ‘rainbows from clouds'.

'A film about the importance of cultural history and truth (two things deeply under siege these days), Wiseman's epic Ex Libris might make you cry with happiness; it's the good fight being fought.' (Time Out)
