Alison is a land girl, mourning her lover, lost in action. Before he was a soldier, Peter was a classically trained organist stuck in a disappointing job as a cinema organist. Bob is a GI, perplexed that his girl back home doesn't write any more. Thomas is a magistrate, mountaineer and pillar of the local establishment who may have a dark secret. Four stories. Four pilgrims brought together on the old road to Canterbury in the strangest and gentlest war movie ever made.
