In the Earth
While other lockdown films have focused on a life indoors, director, Ben Wheatly’s, love of the English countryside is on full display in this phantasmagorical folk-horror flick.
As the outside world scrambles to find a cure to a virus that has decimated society, a scientist (Joel Fry) and a park ranger (Ellora Torchia) explore a remote woodland to research crop growth, but instead find themselves tangled in the undergrowth with something dark and primal and relentless.
With echoes of Wheatly’s previous film A Field in England, and also notes of Alex Garland’s psychedelic sci-fi, Annihilation, In the Earth is a very British folk-horror with a rich mythos and some truly spectacular moments.
