Melancholia

Denmark/Sweden/France/Germany, 2011, 133mins, Cert.15

Film description

In this psychological drama sci-fi film by Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark, Nymphomaniac) Justine’s (Kirsten Dunst) exorbitant wedding reception, organized by her controlling sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), does not go quite as planned – the bride is slowly succumbing to the state of depression, the guests and family members are turning against each other. More worryingly, however, – there is a mystical planet, Melancholia, on its way to collide with the Earth.

Dr. Stefan Skrimshire (University of Leeds) will provide a short talk after the film, drawing on its themes of death, time, and the end of the world. This will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
