Moon Over the Alley
An extraordinarily unique kitchen-sink musical depicting the diverse residents of a London boarding house; ‘The Moon Over the Alley’ (1976) defies definition. Stunningly photographed in gritty black and white, the film shows a community struggling against redevelopment and the alienation of city life. Yet the joyous potential in the simple moments when people come together is portrayed magically through the psychedelic folk, jazz, and reggae influenced songs of Galt MacDermot (the celebrated composer of 1979’s ‘Hair’). A rare and only recently rediscovered oddity – certainly not one to be missed. Programmed by Jack Higgins.
