Film description

Curated by the BFI Network's Ben Taylor, Northern Exposure brings together the best live action, animation and documentary shorts from filmmakers across the North.

Selections for this programme include the award-winning Hanging On, archive based Lost Connections and the bizarre, Divination Dave.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to chat with the BFI Network team about the support available through the Film Hub. It's a great opportunity to meet the growing community of local filmmakers, and support exciting work from emerging UK talent.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with some of the featured filmmakers, led by Film Hub North’s BFI Network team

After the Q&A, there will be networking drinks in the Pyramid Theatre Bar.

RUTH & SAFIYA (2021, 15mins)

Ruth and Safiya is a story about friendships in unlikely places, challenging stereotypes, and the power of community. Ruth, an isolated pensioner, meets Safiya, a teenage Syrian refugee who is haunted by the life she fled from. Filmed on location in Skipton, the story is set in an allotment, showing the power of the earth and nature in creating a bond that transcends age, race and nationality.

Lost Connections is a new short film that offers a poetic response to the experience of the Coronavirus pandemic. Made possible through a unique UK-wide collaboration of national and regional publicly-funded film archives, Lost Connections draws on a century of archive footage that invites reflections on loss, loneliness, isolation, and expressions of desire, optimism, hope and renewal.
