The Reason I Jump (relaxed screenings)
We will be showing a specially accessible version of the film that’s tailored to autistic audiences and aimed at creating a more relaxed viewing experience.
This version includes a special subtitle stream which will include both subtitling of dialogue as well as warnings of potentially challenging or difficult moments within the film itself. These warnings will focus on moments that could be challenging from a visual, aural, and emotional perspective and will be accompanied by guidance text and symbols alerting viewers to the imminent approach of any such moments.
The Reason I Jump is a great leap forward in the representation of the non-verbal autistic experience on screen.
The film is based on the equally ground-breaking book of the same name, written by the Japanese author Naoki Higashida from his own experience at the age of 13. It blends passages from his writing, discovering what his autism means to him, with intimate portraits of five other remarkable young people in similar situations. The film opens its audience to a different way of perceiving the world.
