The Red Turtle
The animation follows the story of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds. The film maintains the effortless skill, imagination, and beauty which Studio Ghibli are known for but takes a surprisingly minimalist diversion, which results in a refreshingly calm, serene and gentle tale.
Although expertly light in both dialogue and story, the film expertly conveys complex milestones experienced by most ranging from birth, love to loss, with a masterful and effortless light touch. The films apparent simplicity is achieved through well-honed craft and expertly combines a rich array of animation styles and devices along with a rich symphony of music to depict a profoundly poignant tale.
This rich story is truly accessible to all, as younger audiences will be enthralled by the whimsical inhabitants of the island and vibrant colours and older audiences marvel at a truly one-off idyllic masterpiece.
