A Support for Ukraine screening
Showtimes and location

Film description

This screening is being held in support for Ukraine. Ticket sales will be donated to the UNHCR Refugee Agency emergency appeal. Learn more.

During the war, Nadezhda (Maya Bulgakova) flew daring combat missions as a pilot. Now, she struggles to adapt to post-war life: dissatisfied with her lot as a headteacher, hapless in romance, drifting apart from her daughter, and haunted by a lost love. Having survived the battle, can she make peace with a world that is shifting beneath her feet?

Banned by the Soviet Union at the time. Larisa Shepitko’s deft exploration of generational conflict and the burdens of the past established her as Ukraine’s most celebrated female director. Maya Bulgakova is stunning as the quietly revolutionary female protagonist, difficult and uncompromising, but always deeply sympathetic.

If you’d like to read more about the director and the film, please see some programme notes we’ve collected on the film: Criterion Collection: Wings | Sense of Cinema.

This screening of Larisa Sheptiko‘s Wings was originally part of the Soviet 60's season, alongside three other Russian and Armenian-language films from the 1960s, in collaboration with Klassiki.

In light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this season is now no longer able to go ahead as planned. However, we have decided to go proceed with our screening of Wings, for two reasons. Firstly, Larisa Shepitko was a Ukrainian director, and her work is an important part of the cultural heritage of a country now under assault. And secondly, we've agreed with Klassiki to donate all the ticket sales to the UNHCR emergency appeal – more details here.

As well as buying a ticket for a screening, we would also encourage those who are able, to donate whatever else they can to help this important cause. Any additional donations can be made during the check-out process, or via our donate page.
