Synopsis:

The buzziest film at this year’s Cannes film festival, The Florida Project is a deeply moving, warm and unforgettably poignant look at childhood, from the director of Tangerine, Sean Baker.

Set on a stretch of highway just outside of Disney World, the film follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious mother Halley over the course of a single summer. Halley is largely absent, and Moonee doesn’t know that she has turned to prostitution to keep them in food and rent. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget motel managed by Bobby (a career-best Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion.

Critical reaction:
  • Another superbly sympathetic portrait of marginalised experience from a film-maker whose great triumph is that he never feels like a tourist ★★★★★

    Mark Kermode, THE GUARDIAN

  • A hysterically rude, visually stunning cinematic theme park...  It’s exactly what you’d want him [Sean Baker] to do after Tangerine: shift tack, find another corner of America, and paint the hell out of it, with no premium on exuberance, and no holds barred ★★★★★
