Fences is the story of Troy Maxson, a mid-century Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career but was too old when the major leagues began admitting black players. Maxson tries to be a good husband and father, but his lost dream of glory eats at him, causing him to make a decision that threatens to tear his family apart.
Directed by Denzel Washington and based on the late August Wilson’s adaptation of his own Pulitzer Prize winning play, Fences is a brilliant portrayal of the ‘everyman’, dragged down by a cruel world and his own bad choices.
Denzel Washington and Viola Davis make for a sensational double act ★★★★
A simply extraordinary film without crashes, bangs and wallops but full of towering performances delivered with intelligence, power and heart. ★★★★★
